Destiny's Faces Masterlist

His mother had been the one who'd introduced him to the church. He'd sat there, staring at the cross and listening to the priest, and he'd prayed. Even when he was older and his friends had been teasing him, Dr. Caine had prayed every day, because he'd always been lucky – as lucky as one could be – and if God was the one responsible for it then he didn't want it to end. His mother's religion became his religion. He didn't stop believing just because he became a scientist who was looking beyond what the Bible taught him. He was a firm defender of the Big Bang and believed in Jesus even though some parts of the Bible were nothing more than fantastic stories to him. His parish strengthened him but he criticized his priest's homophobic sermons. His religion was his power … until he was alone all of a sudden. He'd never been able to overcome his wife's death and not even God could comfort him, so he stopped believing.

Caine breathed in the fresh air and opened his eyes. No dimly-lit corridors, no competition to get the colonel or Rush's attention. Just fresh, clean air, the wind in the high grass and the shadow of the obelisk. Destiny had been a dark adventure – frightening and depressing. This planet was a chance. Maybe the obelisk's creators, whoever they were, could bring them home. This world was better than the Destiny – a present. Better than uncertainty. Even if the aliens wouldn't be able to help them, he didn't mind because he didn't want to go back. There was nothing waiting for home back home.

Those people here were his family – his new parish. All he ever needed. This world was hope.

He believed.

This was beautiful, and it sheds light on Caine's comments in the episode. I never saw him as a religious nut either, and your story explains it all beautifully. Thanks for sharing!
